Update Notification Script in Kogaion

For a while I entered in amateur linux administration. I can not say I’m a professional because I have not yet charged anyone for administration so just because I manage my servers all by my self, to me it means that I’m at amateur level.
I learned from experience that it is helpful to know that your server needs updates, that packages updates needs to be installed, that your server has a service that stopped, such as MySQL and you have to make somehow the server to detect this and then try to restart the service and notify you that this has happened.
Many things related to a server are those that can be monitored and there are some great utilities in this regard but often I prefer to create and run my own scripts monitoring and reporting.
That is why I have developed several scripts that runs with the help of CRON and this would be my monitor in what happens to a server.
If I declare myself an amateur, I can declare specialist-amateur in servers running Debian and Ubuntu then CentOS and at investigating level other operating sistems, but recently I started, as I mentioned here, to button the Kogaion OS – testing, verification, implementation etc. ..
Personally I installed Kogaion and then people around me who liked the idea realised that they wanted Kogaion on their personal computers.
Problems arise when they want something, an application that do something additional activities or when they just want help with anything and … there is no one to intervene. It appears instinctive need to call the one who knows (in this case … the undersigned) and call to solve the problem.
Let’s say 10 such situations occur in a certain time, and probably can not even reach 2 of them and on 4 I was in my way them and on the other four we took the opportunity to drink a beer. Also difficulty grade occurs, and why not related to the degree of personal comfort of my mood at the time.
I wanted to solve some situations of this kind, REMOTE – connected from home or from anywhere else, and so I asked people to let me connect to their remote computers or to make some of them to run automatically.
So it is that … I started working.
The first situation that I dealt with was Continue reading Update Notification Script in Kogaion

Kernel 4.4.4-Kogaion

I have read on the Serban Stanescu‘s site the procedure he followed to install Kogaion.

I think I already six days since I struggled with the wireless using methods unexpected even for me as I had no idea what I was doing but I wrote here:

Anyway, in the few days I caught drag this operating system. Moves. Turns harder on me because deh, old architecture but … it works pretty well even.

Installation was simple:

  • ISO Download from here
  • Loaded / written using a stick RUFUS
  • On the laptop using USB boot (BOOT setting in the BIOS menu – I went to using F12 immediately after you start the computer but can vary)
  • Live version starts (you can tell if you have problems with different hardware – My work is not Wi-Fi)
  • Calamares installed using the installer (if this does not work for you, you can try to start the CLI as root Calamares)
  • User kogaion have kogaion as password and root password is root – su will require the root password.
  • You should set the computer where they are (here as Europe / Bucharest)
  • You should set the keyboard (usually I leave them default here because I have not ever seen keyboards in Romanian)
  • You have to decide the structure of the disk (partition)
  • You must set a user name and password for it with a password for root
  • Follow and read SUMMARY  – list of changes
  • RUN INSTALLATION – actual changes to the system
  • The  install process ended – Kogaion installed – The computer must be restarted.

For a better organization of your files always set your /home folder on a different partition, dedicated, separated from the root filesystem.

In this way the resettlement of any other operating system (linux based OS), if you use the same user and the same / home partition without formatting all configuration settings will be there.

Kogaion presented from the above ISO version uses the 3.14 kernel.

Right now there are currently implementing tests for kernel 4.4 kernel on which I have installed over 3.14 and is in testing and on my test station.

It seems that 4.4 is stable enough and will be used in versions of Kogaion stable.

Test Kogaion

We are looking for installers of Kogaion, last OS produced by Romanian team of developers, so … I installed one myself.
I installed Kogaion on my laptop  Dell Latitude D630.
I downloaded the image here:
Using  RUFUS  on Windows I have “burned” a USB stick to start an installation using the downloaded ISO image.
More about the team and other issues can be found on the site

For now … tests tests and findings.

I am expecting you to try this too !

USB install can’t mount CD rom

Like I said earlier, I’m looking for an OS and  this involves many tests and digging, so I came to a step that seems hard to find a solution.
Eventually I spotted it and I resolved it, and therefore I’ll write below to others who may face the same problem, the solution found me.
The problem arose when installing Debian (netinstall) using a USB stick. I do not know if it is relevant in this case version that was somewhat common problem caused by the software used to create the USB Boot Disk.
Installation starts by declaring the location and the type of keyboard used and then move to find CD-ROM, something which normally should go but in this case did not want.
The installer started to detect errors related to CD-ROM and the default driver for it. It is possible that this was showed because I have a hard disk instead of CD-ROM installed on laptop but I repeated to a server, that had an optical drive, and the error was repeated.
In both cases it seems that the blame was the software used to create the image on USB, UNetbootin which would create a similar problem.
The solution came by manually checking the devices in / dev, then mount the device’s manual in place / cdrom.
This foreclose on a shell in the install window, the shell is rudimentary but provide basic commands.

ls /dev

mount /dev/sdb /cdrom

In my laptop /dev/sdb was the USB stick but in my server the stick was /dev/sda because the server has a configuration with RAID …
Maybe it will help you in times of fierce searches …

Your site is IPV6 READY

Right below to the side  button is a small banner, which says that this website is  ipv6 ready. This means that for some time the site is ipv6 ready , entered in IOT (Internet of Things) as I like to say about IPs ipv6.
Eh … how did I do that?
First I tuned the DNS records for IPv6, AAAA record and have completed an IPV6 IP provided by those where I host this website. They have so many right now as they gave me a whole class … I’m not going to use them all so I did set up only a few.
My beginnings with the hosting service were with them in their offer 1 IP IPV4 and 5 IP’s of  IPV6  and then changed it and they gave me a whole class.
How IPV6 was at the start days when I started to get hosting from these people, I did not have mush to do with the five IP’s just only to configure local IPv6  server VPS assigning IPv6 local IPs to five different accounts. I noticed that it did not help because those IP’s did not exit through their nodes and so it remained configured on local VPS accounts. Continue reading Your site is IPV6 READY

In search of a OS.

I am one of those who prefer to work at a computer a great time. I do not like to buy computers / new laptops without upgrading the old ones  and be sure that I have done my maximum to those who were faithful until recent times.
That is why we have multiple devices, each with a certain age, some older, some newer but none fresher than 3 years :).

The equipment in question are:

Laptop – Dell Inspiron 1501 – purchased in 2007

Laptop – Dell Latitude D630 – received for use in 2008 and acquired in 2014

EE-PC – Asus – acquired in 2010

Desktop – HP Compaq dc5700 PC

My problem is that … they’re getting old and all recent operating systems make them make true fans of hurricanes and speeds leave desirable for most of them.

As I said initially:

I am looking for an operating system!

Debian – How to delete files older than X days

Hey, recently I have wondered what is the CLI command that I have to use in order to delete all the files older than X days. Using a debian server I have to use a linux command to do that.

I have discovered that I have to use the “find” command to filter those files first and then select them to delete.

Command Sintax:

find /path/to/files* -mtime +5 -exec rm {} \;

This searches for files older than 5 days in the mentioned folder and delete them all.

The first argument is the path to the files. This can be a path, a directory, or a wildcard as in the example above. I would recommend using the full path, and make sure that you run the command without the exec rm to make sure you are getting the right results.
The second argument, -mtime, is used to specify the number of days old that the file is. If you enter +5, it will find files older than 5 days.
The third argument, -exec, allows you to pass in a command such as rm. The {} \; at the end is required to end the command.

This should work on Ubuntu, Suse, Redhat, or pretty much any version of linux.

Start on Build 10074 – Windows 10

Who is in tests with Windows 10 knows that appeared a new update – Build 10074.

Start on Build 10074 Windows 10 when upgrade from the previous version, no longer works. Press the start button, “Windows” key or any key and do not function. I thought initially that ended with testing and searched if there were users who had the same problem with mine.

I found this discussion link and I amused at the peak of the resolution there. To fix the Start button to do an update for the Windows guys have fixed the problem with an update it seems to have failed to integrate in build – and you must go to Settings UpdateUpdate

The funny part is when you complain that you do not have a Start button and someone recommends you to press the Start-Settings

Now for the curious ones, there is another way to get to Settings and that is right-click on Desktop and select Personalize:

Start la Build 10074 - Windows 10
Start la Build 10074 – Windows 10

Then it’s simple … is seeking the update and install – restart and ready – you have a Start Button Functional

I always liked to write about open source and …. I always liked to test operating systems.
This means that starting with Windows Vista I took part in the testing of closed source operating system (hehe) – owner – to give a critical eye on this operating system.

As you know I like to use free software development. In this period, the Windows version came out with Windows 10 (so easy) which, it seems, it will be free. Reaching such a creative power that it allows you to create something free on your money seems absurd but unknown are the ways … and probably not difficult to predict.

To test this version of Windows you need a Microsoft account (whether it’s live, hotmail or outlook) to prove that you test this operating system. I have a tester account for some time and my account is Gmail : D .

DVD image is downloaded somewhere here:

The “burn” on a DVD and then installed on a computer. We recommend testing a computer, not a production, being vulnerable sensitive data on the disk because the state is the operating system.

After installation follow updates and upgrades. Many “bugs”, especially after upgrading to version 10041, which wants the latest version. After this upgrade “dies” application “Mail, Calendar, and People” only marks.

What I like to repair is that it appeals to the console 😀 . Open a powershell (or administrator account “run as administrator”) and enter this command:

Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like "*windowscommunicationsapps*"} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online

Once entered this command you can go to “Store” (Store) to download and install the application again. Until you run the above command, you get all sorts of errors related to this application.

To fix the problem appeared with “Mail, Calendar, and People” run the above command in PowerShell in Windows Run as administrator : D

Other bugs (bugs) are and as the test …. return : D
